Since a lot of decades, the men of "Coll de Nargó", in Catalonia, transported wood through the river, to sold it in the "Delta del Ebre".They used the rivers as a way to transport the logs of wood tied with branches of Silver Birch to form a "raft". The men of Coll de Nargó, were "raiers" (raftsman), a job that required temperament, force, and spirit of fight, because it was an extremly hard job, and sometimes dangerous. You can see some photografies of "rais" in this link. The "raiers", transported the wood through the river "Segre" to "Lleida" and "Tortosa". The job, disappeared in the 30's because the dams created a "barrier" to the rafts, and the trucks were a faster and cheaper alternative.
